Industrial Gases' 'Emerging Bull' Tag Is Mostly a Linde Story

Hypothesis Opus 5 · Research Sonnet 5 · Writing Sonnet 5 · Prompt v1.0

Linde's uninterrupted 153-day strongly bullish streak is real, but Air Products only just clawed back into strongly bullish after a six-week wobble tied to a single hydrogen-project writeoff, and Air Liquide has sat in a neutral band for over two months despite a strong electronics beat — so the bucket-wide 'emerging bull' label overstates a story that is still mostly Linde's alone, with two earnings prints in the next 48 hours as the live test.

The band data doesn't confirm a cohort move

Linde (LIN) has held a strongly bullish trend band continuously since February 26, 153 straight days through July 28 — the kind of long, uninterrupted secular run that stands on its own regardless of any recent catalyst. Air Products (APD) looked similar through May, running strongly bullish from March 4 to May 29, but then slipped back to mildly bullish for six weeks before re-entering strongly bullish only on July 14 — a two-week-old re-confirmation, not a clean multi-month streak. Air Liquide (AI.PA) is the clearest holdout: after its own strongly bullish stretch ended May 11, it dropped into a neutral band and has stayed there for more than 2.5 months, never re-establishing even a mildly bullish reading. Year-over-year price action is essentially flat across the group — LIN +8.4%, APD -0.8%, AI.PA -2.3% — consistent with the 'gone nowhere' framing, but the recent month's strength is concentrated in one name.

What's driving each name

APD's July re-entry into strongly bullish coincided almost exactly with its June 30 announcement that it would not proceed with the Louisiana Clean Energy Complex hydrogen project and would exit related green-hydrogen builds, taking a pre-tax charge of up to $2.9B; shares jumped roughly 6.8% on the news as investors read it as capital discipline rather than as evidence of accelerating gas demand. APD reports fiscal Q3 results on July 30, with consensus looking for adjusted EPS of $3.35.

Linde's move looks better-founded on fundamentals: Q1 2026 electronics-segment sales grew 10% on advanced-chip investment across the US, China and Korea, backed by a $7.1B sale-of-gas backlog, per its own earnings release. Linde reports Q2 results on July 31, guiding to $4.40-$4.50 adjusted EPS.

Air Liquide's disconnect is the odd one out: its H1 2026 results showed Electronics comparable growth of 9.5% versus roughly 4.6% consensus and a record €6B project backlog, yet at least one wire framed the print as 'solid growth despite a revenue miss', and the stock's trend band has not budged from neutral.

Valuation gap

Linde trades near 28x forward earnings versus its own five-year average of about 35x, leaving room to re-rate if the electronics build-out holds. APD's forward multiple is murkier — cited around 21x-23x depending on the date sampled, roughly in line with chemicals-sector peers, with a 75.6% payout ratio limiting dividend-growth cushion after the hydrogen writeoffs. With two of three names reporting inside the next two days, the cohort-wide thesis gets an immediate fundamental check.
