SaaS Tier 2 Bucket Splits: Infrastructure Names Confirm Trend, Seat-Based Names Still Chase Price

Hypothesis Opus 5 · Research Sonnet 5 · Writing Sonnet 5 · Prompt v1.0

Six of nine names in the desk's SAAS Tier 2 bucket have genuinely crossed into confirmed bull bands across a staggered 90-day window, led by Twilio's 104-day strongly bullish streak — but the bucket's two biggest 30-day price movers, Atlassian and Salesforce, remain in strongly bearish trend bands even as their fundamentals visibly improve, meaning the +12.6% one-month pop is a mix of real inflection and price-ahead-of-trend catch-up.

What's happening

The nine-member SAAS Tier 2 bucket (TWLO, BILL, DT, IOT, FROG, NTNX, VEEV, TEAM, CRM) is up an average 12.6% over the past 30 days and a striking 33.4% over 90 days, against a trailing one-year return of roughly flat (-3.1%). That combination — a dead year followed by a sharp multi-month bounce — is exactly the setup the desk flagged as worth checking for a genuine trend inflection versus a short-covering bounce.

The band data supports the bullish read for six names. TWLO, DT, FROG, IOT and NTNX are in strongly bullish posture and VEEV is in mildly bullish, and critically the crossings are staggered, not clustered: TWLO flipped bullish April 17 (104 days held), FROG on June 2, NTNX on June 22, DT on June 30, IOT on July 10, and VEEV only as recently as July 22. That spread across a 14-week window is a stronger tell than a single-week cluster would be.

But the bucket's largest 30-day price movers — BILL (+31.9%), TEAM (+32.0%) and CRM (+19.3%) — remain in mildly bearish or strongly bearish bands. Price is running well ahead of confirmed trend for exactly the seat-based names the hypothesis worried about, even though the underlying fundamentals have quietly turned. Atlassian's most recent quarter showed cloud revenue growth accelerating to 29% YoY with a hiked FY2026 guide, and shares jumped further after Jira's new AI Development Hub integrated third-party coding agents, with Morgan Stanley initiating coverage calling TEAM a likely AI beneficiary. Salesforce's Agentforce ARR surpassed $1B, up 205% YoY, and Guggenheim upgraded the stock to Buy citing Agentforce adoption. Notably, a coordinated software-sector rebound lifted Salesforce, ServiceNow and Workday together on July 27, and the broader 2026 rally traces to Snowflake-led earnings that challenged 'SaaSpocalypse' fears in late May — both suggest some of this bucket's late-window moves ride sector beta rather than idiosyncratic re-rating.

Cracks inside the bull case

The consumption-side evidence is real: Twilio's dollar-based net expansion accelerated to 114% with Voice-AI revenue up 60%+ YoY and raised FY guidance, and Twilio still trades at 4.7x FY26E EV/Revenue versus its own 10-year median of 7.2x, implying room left. But JFrog, one of the biggest 90-day winners, is now -18.7% over 30 days after Morgan Stanley downgraded it on valuation concerns following an 'extraordinary run-up' and insiders sold $98.2M in shares with no offsetting buying. Nutanix's ARR growth also decelerated to 15% YoY as VMware-migration revenue timing pushed later in the fiscal year, a genuine friction point inside the displacement thesis.

Why it matters

The bucket is not a uniform AI-beneficiary story — it's two overlapping ones. The consumption/infrastructure cohort (TWLO, DT, FROG, IOT, NTNX) shows band confirmation stretched across months with supporting usage data, while the seat-based names (TEAM, CRM) are rallying on real fundamental news but haven't yet earned trend confirmation, and BILL remains whipsawing between bear bands despite its price move.
